Bromocriptine is a medication that imitates the neurochemical dopamine, causing the brain to react identically to the natural chemical substance. This monoamine neurotransmitter undergoes a reaction with particular receptors in the brain, commanding various kinds of activities, for instance learnedness, sleep, attentiveness, controlled movement. As a dopamine agonist, Bromocriptine is employed to block the generation of specific hormones.

Bromocriptine has been indicated in the treatment of Type II diabetes, due to its ability to suppress lipogenesis and improve glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. It has also been proven to alter the CNS (central nervous system) regulating metabolism, and so can be used to prevent weight gain.
Clinical studies on rats have also suggested that Bromocriptine is a potent free radical quencher. In the studies, rats were given a component of tobacco called DMBA to a level that was likely to induce breast cancer. However, rats that had been pre-treated with Bromocriptine avoided contracting cancer. Bromocriptine and breast cancer prevention have, therefore, also been linked.
After administration of a single dose decrease prolactin levels in the blood occurs within 2 hours, maximal effect after 8 h; antiparkinsonian effect is in 30-90 min, the maximum effect after 2 h; the decrease in the level of this hormone occurs after 1-2 h, the maximum effect after 4-8 weeks of therapy.
Bromocriptine usually does not have any side effects but if any appear consult your doctor as you may need immediate medical help. These are symptoms you should be very attentive to while taking Bromocriptine: Abdominal cramps or discomfort, confusion, constipation, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, drop in blood pressure, drowsiness, dry mouth, a persistent watery nasal discharge, hallucinations (particularly in Parkinson’s patients), headache, inability to sleep, indigestion, light-headedness, loss of coordination, nausea.
Before taking generic Bromocriptine, please consult your doctor if you have allergies or have had allergic reactions in past. Also, if the patient is dealing with certain genetic enzyme problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure, consulting with doctor before taking this medication is mandatory. Also, medical history concerning blood flow problems like low blood pressure, breathing problems, gastrointestinal, heart problems, kidney disease, liver disease, mental/mood disorders recent pregnancy should be discussed at length. The drug may cause dizziness, hence, do not drive or operate heavy machinery. Do not drink alcohol or other alcoholic beverages. Mothers are also not recommended to breastfeed their children if they are taking this medication.
